August 1, 2026 - August 8, 2026
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Ballard Millinery Studio
Join milliners and craftspeople Wayne Wichern, Jeanna Gomez, and Miriam Goodman-Miller for 2 days dedicated to all things hats, with an emphasis on theatrical millinery. We will be covering a range of hat types and techniques.
August 1st – Day 1 will start with an introduction to commonly used millinery materials and different ways to make a hat. From there, students will be able to form their own hat on a wooden block.
August 8th – Day 2 will focus on finishing, modern theatrical techniques, and materials. We will include flat patterning, creative hat blocking, adhesives, and safety.
Students will need to purchase a hood or cartwheel on site. Prices range from $20-$85. THIS PIECE IS NEEDED FOR THE CLASS.
Students might not leave with a finished hat, but they will leave with a pulled hat and the knowledge of how to finish it on their own. Throughout this class, we will be discussing how to make good choices for hat crafting depending on what final result is needed. Will the hat be delicately perched on the head, then lovingly placed on a shelf? Or will it be part of a 30 second wig and costume change and end up in the bottom of a laundry basket? Will it need to be washed? Fit multiple performers? We will guide you through our thought processes of what to consider when planning your project.
The registration fee for this class is $50. Upon successful completion of the class, attendees will be refunded $25. This registration fee will NOT be refunded if a cancellation is received less than 7 days prior to class.
The class will be held at Ballard Millinery Studio on Saturday, August 1st and Saturday, August 8th from 9AM-4PM with a meal break midday. Parking is available on the street and paid lots. Please plan accordingly to arrive to the class on time.
